Tips and Tricks to Ace IELTS Essay Writing

As discussed in A Step-by-Step Guide to Plan your Essay in IELTS Essay Writing Task 2, planning is essential to organize your thoughts and present your ideas in a clear way for gaining maximum marks in essay writing.

Here are some tips and tricks which you can consider to frame your essay:

Captivating and complete Introduction

You just have a few seconds to capture the attention of the examiner.  Therefore, you need to gather your thoughts on the topic, organize your ideas, and catch the attention with attention-seeking words. Begin with a provoking statement, detail it in short, and include background information about the topic. The ideal structure of the introduction is:

  • Background statement (attention-seeking sentence that explains the topic)
  • Paraphrase the Question ( spin the question in your words by using synonyms)
  • Thesis Statement (overview of the topic). You can begin writing using ( In my opinion/ the essay discusses)

Features of Thesis Statement

  • Highlights main points of the essay
  • Clarifies the purpose
  • Good vocabulary
  • Declaration sentence
  • Conveys the main idea

Streamlined Body Paragraph

After you are done with providing a well-defined introduction, you can proceed by explaining your point further using examples. Your body paragraph should be an extension of the introduction and align well with the Thesis Statement.  The last sentence of the body paragraph 1 should be an introduction to your next body paragraph.

The Topic sentence should highlight the main purpose/idea
The topic sentence should highlight the main idea and the context behind it. It is a single declarative sentence dispensing a clear message.  Avoid amalgamating complex and compound sentences and focus on representing a clear idea of what you want to tell the reader.

Empower your point with relative and supportive Examples
An ideal example is imperative to provide a base to your argument and clarifies your point. It can be based on facts or hypotheses. The primary thing is to support your opinion well by citing relevant examples.

“Complete” – Only thing that defines a good explanation
From the introduction to the conclusion, everything needs to be complete in a proper sense. If you have a point in your essay that you find incomplete, you can use facts, example and approach to complete it.

Transition sentence
This is something that has been discussed above, that the paragraph and the sentences should support the thesis statement and the introduction.  It should be a call for the information in the next paragraph.

Conclusion
Here, you need to present your opinion. You can do this by paraphrasing the question.  When you are writing the conclusion, refrain from citing any new information. The conclusion is all about summarizing and acquainting the examiner with your viewpoint.  Therefore, be specific and explain the message in clear words.
