Working on and Writing a well-drafted essay for academic purposes basically means fashioning a coherent set of ideas into an argument. This is because essays are essentially linear—they offer one idea at a time followed by the explanations and then, various others. A flow matters a lot when we talk about essays.
Another thing that matters just as much and perhaps more, is understanding the question in front of you, if you are not able to understand what the question asks of you, it is very easy to lose marks which were meant to just fall easily into your pockets.
The Big Five Questions
To make sure that you achieve the most marks, these are the types of essays that you will have to master on your journey to the top: -
Opinion Essays
These essays mainly are like ’Op-eds’ they ask for your opinions on subject matters or topics provided in the question and hence, it is relatively easier to go through these as long as you state it clearly and support them with examples.
Most people get stuck in these because they feel like they have a problem expressing themselves in a written manner, it is easy to combat these thoughts making a mini note with all your thoughts and then elaborating on them, one by one.
Advantage/Disadvantage Essays
These essays basically ask that you simply discuss the advantages and disadvantages of a certain thing for example: social media.
Now there are two types of questions that might come under these, the first types are direct and they just ask you for advantages or disadvantages. The second type is relatively trickier because it asks that you discuss the advantages and disadvantages as well as give your opinion on if the advantages outweigh the disadvantages or vice versa.
The best way to go through these is to pick your side and stick by it which expressing with clarity and supporting everything with proof.
Double Question Essays
These essays are pretty easy to answer but their questions actually end up confusing people. The best top to solve these essay sis to remember to read and just answer all the questions posed to you.
In fact, many candidates ironically forget this basic principle and the result can be disastrous. If, for instance, you’re asked to discuss the causes and solutions of bullying, but you only deal with the causes having skipped on the solutions, this will not fetch you over 5 band in task response.
Discussion Essays
These questions are usually pretty direct and mention a situation while giving you multiples or views on it, the objective is usually to discuss one side or both. Sometimes, they might also ask you to give your opinion on it.
The way to do this is easy, spend a little time identifying both sides as well as finding supporting points for both of them and make sure you read the question properly and only give out your opinion if asked.
Problem-Solution Essays
These essays are often compared to letter to the editors from the CBSE syllabus and that is indeed justified because they too, talk about a certain problem and suggest the ways to provide a solution to the same.
These essays require you to unlock your creativity and tap into the same as you go ahead and give solutions to the problem in font of you. You needn’t worry because the problems posed to you are usually pretty basic for example: noise pollution or corruption etc.
